Bohm (1996) pointed out, “For each will hear the other through the screen of his own thoughts, which he tends to maintain and defend, regardless of whether or not they are true or coherent” (p. 3). Alertness to this tendency set the tone for the TIES dialogue, encouraging me to strive to maintain tentativeness about what I think I know, observe my reactions and thoughts, identify assumptions, and aim to sustain nonjudgmental respect when listening to various perspectives.
