What is the essence of Montessori’s vision, and how might we ensure that it remains alive?
The Center for Deep Montessori exists to explore, preserve, and carry forward the deeper essence of Maria Montessori’s evolving vision of human development. Through scholarship, dialogue, personal reflection, and lived experience, the Center invites us to follow her discoveries and participate in the continuing inquiry they opened.
Deep Montessori reaches beneath the practices of the method to explore the ideas, experiences, and insights that gave them meaning. From observation, freedom, and the prepared environment to peace, Cosmic Education, and humanity’s place in the cosmos, Montessori’s journey reveals an ever-widening understanding of education and life.
This exploration invites us into our own continuing formation. What qualities of attention, understanding, and care enable us to support the unfolding potential of others? The Center brings scholarship into relationship with self-knowledge, observation, dialogue, wonder, humility, and love.
Deep Montessori Conversations
One question. Many perspectives. An invitation to think together.
The Center is developing online gatherings open to the wider community, each beginning with one provocative question and unfolding through dialogue. What is the essence beneath the details? What does it mean to prepare the adult? What is seeking to emerge through education now?
We envision conversations of 60–90 minutes, held approximately every month or six weeks, shaped by the experiences, attention, and questions of those participating.
Programs Taking Shape
The Center is developing seminars that bring Montessori’s evolving vision into conversation with the questions of our own lives and times. The following possibilities offer a glimpse of inquiries ahead. Details will be shared as each offering develops.
The Evolving Montessori: 1935–1952
Follow the extraordinary final arc of Montessori’s thinking through Cosmic Education, the New Human, Cosmic Love, Cosmic Consciousness, the Psychosphere, and her encounter with syntropy and finalistic phenomena.
What relationships connect these discoveries, and what might they ask of educators today?
Gaia, Cosmic Task, and Right Action
What does it mean to understand ourselves as participants within a living planetary process?
This inquiry brings Montessori into conversation with contemporary understandings of Earth’s systems, cosmogenesis, Indigenous and ecological perspectives, and the responsibilities arising from our own lives and work.
Syntropy: Life, Love, and the Direction of Becoming
An extended inquiry bringing Montessori, Luigi Fantappiè, contemporary science, cosmogenesis, emergence, and lived experience into dialogue.
How might these perspectives deepen our understanding of life, love, and becoming? What possibilities do they invite us to explore, and what questions remain open?
Cosmic Education: From Curriculum to Consciousness
What happens when Cosmic Education becomes a context for our own formation?
Explore how belonging within the unfolding story of Cosmos and Gaia might awaken the discovery of one’s Cosmic Task, in Montessori’s language, or Great Work, in Thomas Berry’s. How do we create conditions in which that sense of purpose and responsibility can emerge?
